Carmen Thyssen Museum
The Essence of 19th-Century Spanish Painting
The Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga opened its doors in 2011 and has become one of the city’s leading cultural venues. The museum is housed in the Palacio de Villalón, a carefully restored 16th-century Renaissance building that preserves historic architectural elements combined with contemporary museum spaces.
The permanent collection comes largely from the private collection of Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza and focuses on 19th-century Spanish painting. Among the works on display are paintings from the Romantic, Costumbrista, and Landscape movements, with a special emphasis on depictions of Andalusia and its traditions.
The museum houses works by important Spanish artists such as Zurbarán, Sorolla, Zuloaga, Julio Romero de Torres, and Raimundo de Madrazo, offering a comprehensive overview of Spanish art during a pivotal era of cultural and social transformation.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga organizes temporary exhibitions, educational activities, lectures, and cultural events that attract both local and international visitors.
